Seized Vehicle Reclaim Procedure

GT Recovery provides 24 hr vehicle recovery and removal services to An Garda Síochána for vehicles seized and detained under section 41 of the Road Traffic Act and vehicles subject to technical examination.
To reclaim a vehicle seized under S41 you must obtain a Garda Release Form. This form should be obtained as soon as possible following your vehicle seizure and ideally within the first 24 hrs.

To reclaim your vehicle, please follow the procedure below.
  1. The registered owner of the vehicle must attend a Garda Station within the district where the vehicle was detained. A Garda District may have specific stations assigned to the issue of Garda Release Forms. Please enquire at any Garda Station in the relevant district.
  2. The registered owner must present one form of photographic identification (Passport or Driving License) along with all supporting documentation relevant to the detention of the vehicle. (receipts for tax/arrears, insurance etc)
  3. A ‘Vehicle Release’ form will be provided by the Garda Station authorising the release of the vehicle once all outstanding issues pertaining to the seized vehicle have been addressed.
  4. You must Contact GT Recovery to arrange for the release of your vehicle and make payment for recovery/storage charges.
  5. All outstanding charges for the detention, recovery, and storage of the vehicle must be discharged in full in accordance with Article 5(1)  before the vehicle will be released and the Garda Release Form must be presented at the storage compound when collecting your vehicle.
  6. In certain cases, the Gardaí may direct that the vehicle should not be driven and is required to be towed out of the storage compound. In such cases, the vehicle will not be released until a recovery vehicle has arrived at the compound for collection of the vehicle.
  7. In cases where a vehicle is detained for non-display of Motor Tax, the vehicle may be driven away on foot of a valid current tax disc along with a receipt for all Motor Tax arrears.
